America is a country founded and created by multiple cultures. American Indians were the first settlers who roamed the land. Later, explorers such as Christopher Columbus and other Europeans made contact and created settlements in what has become known as America. Many Asians immigrated to the US in the 1800s. They worked in the gold mines and helped establish railroads. After work projects were finished, many Asians were forced from these areas and ended up in what today is known as Chinatowns. Many cities across the country have a Chinatown section and can trace origins to this period. Along with work, many Asians, mostly men, mingled with the local white culture. Interracial dating and marriage occurred, but was intensely frowned on and laws originally passed for Black Americans applied to Asian Americans as well.
Anti-miscegenation laws were the laws that prohibited mixing of the races. These laws stayed on the books until after WW2. After WW2, many soldiers came home with Asian brides. The vast amount of soldiers who did created a need to change miscegenation laws and tailor them according to the interracial marriage shift that was occurring in the US. Many states that previously had miscegenation laws repealed them from 1948 to 1967. And by June 1967, the US government declared miscegenation unconstitutional, making it legal to marry interracially. Prior to this, a non-white marriage partner in a relationship couldn’t inherit property. This is similar to recent legislation for gay people today. Interracial marriages have come along way. The most apt to marry interracially are Latina and Asians. The success of these relationships is often gender specific. White man/Asian women tend to be the most stable and long lasting with the lowest amount of divorces. One the other hand, White woman/Asian man tend to divorce after 10 years of marriage. Asian Americans are different in their thinking and tend to follow the status quo of American culture. More Asian Americans marry interracially than Asians who are from foreign countries.
Many Asians from foreign countries marry American men from agencies on the internet. Some countries have economic concerns driving people out of the country. Conversely, American men have always loved Asian culture and the people in it. It’s often a good match. And now it has protection for the immigrant as well. In order to marry, the man must complete a questionnaire on criminal and marital background. This law in detail is called IMBRA and helps avoid abuse that has happened to some foreign brides who make contact through dating agencies.
Asians dating and marrying interracially is nothing new at all. Also to note, Asian-White couples have fewer hindrances from the public at large as contrast to Black-White couples. Fewer hindrances make it easier to enjoy a relationship. Black-White couples report problems doing things many take for granted such as going to restaurants, or even churches that Asian-White couples don’t experience.
